Indexes in fiction

I enjoy reading novels in my spare time, and as indexing is so niche, it makes me happy to see indexes mentioned in fiction.

I intend to post a list of novels I read that mention indexes or indexing.

To start of this list is

Emma Donoghue's The Pull of the Stars (page 195)

“… I pulled Jellett’s Midwifery from the shelf. I thumbed through the book, but my hands were shaking so much I couldn't find the page describing Walcher’s position; I had to look under W in the index.”

The novel takes place in Dublin in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic. It follows Nurse Julia Power for a few days when she is caring for expectant mothers who have the flu.

For anyone writing a book which needs a proofread or an index, hire a professional from AFEPI (Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders & Indexers of Ireland) , the Society of Indexers, or CIEP (Charter Institute of Editing and Proofreading) to lighten your load!
